«The Slap», Christos Tsiolkas

Pride, prejudice and potato salad: incendiary ingredients of the suburban barbie. Little wonder then, when things boil over, and a father wallops a child. The problem here is that the child is not the father's own.
This is Melbourne and the guilty party, Harry, is a red-blooded, racist misogynist, happiest when ogling cuties from the deck of his home.
His cousin, Hector, is more sympathetic (despite cheating on his wife with a teenage girl). And Rosie, mother of wronged toddler Hugo, still insists on breastfeeding the three-year-old. In consequence of which, the initial sections of this novel come as something of an assault themselves. But, as Tsiolkas moves on through the lives of the barbecue guests (and ever further from the slap), this novel evolves.
While his women are largely reasonable, and his men largely not, the concerns of each feel understood, and the voices of an angsty gay student and an ageing Greek grandfather are rendered especially vividly. Tsiolkas falls flat when he uses people to represent attitudes, but elsewhere this is surprising, even affecting, novel, and as addictive as the best soap opera
