«On the Way to the Summit. Did Reykjavik Bring a Summit in Washington and Nuclear Disarment Any Closer?», Alexander Pumpyansky
Soaring hopes and bitter disappointment.
No results at the summit and the clash for Reykjavik's legacy.
Reykjavik's true significance for the future.
What does tomorrow hold?
Are Soviet-American relations facing new heights or an abyss?
To what extent has Reykjavik brought Moscow and Washington and nuclear disarmament closer?
Do both sides really want not just a summit meeting but a meeting on top, at the peak of a nuclear-free world?
The U.S.S.R. has proved that it wishes for the latter.
The U.S.A. still has to prove that it also seeks to attain this supreme goal.
These are the main conclusions of Alexander Pumpyansky, a well-known Soviet writer on international affairs and the authour of "On the way to the summit".
46-year-old Alexander Pumpyansky covered the Soviet-American summit in Reykjavik as a special correspondent for the political weekly "New Times". In 1975-1976 he worked in New York as a correspondent for the newspaper "Komsomolskaya pravda". At present he is a deputy Editor-in-Chief of "New Times". He is the author of several booklets, including "Cannot Shell and the Parthenon" (Novosto Press Agency Publishing House; in English, German, Spanish and French), and several scripts of documentary films, such as "The Unknown War", a 20-part TV serial, a joint venture of Soviet and US film-makers.
